That combination has one signature outcome: the slab leak. Here's what six-plus decades of working on this housing stock has taught us.

Why is Memorial slab-leak country?

When these ranch homes went up, slab-on-grade construction was the modern way to build, and the supply lines — usually soft copper — were routed in or under the concrete. That was a reasonable choice in 1962. Sixty years later, two forces are working against every one of those buried lines.

The first is the clay. Memorial sits on expansive gumbo that swells with every wet spring and shrinks with every August drought, flexing the slab — and the pipes in it — season after season. Copper tolerates a lot, but not decades of micro-movement against concrete and soil. The second is time itself: pinhole corrosion from within, accelerated by our moderately hard water. The signs are easy to dismiss individually: a water bill that jumps for no reason, a warm stripe on the floor, the faint sound of running water at 2 a.m., a water heater that never seems to rest. Any one of them, in a home of this era, deserves a real diagnosis.

How do you find a slab leak without tearing up the house?

With instruments, before saws. Our leak detection process isolates the hot and cold sides at the manifold to confirm which line is losing pressure, then pinpoints the leak with acoustic listening gear and, where useful, thermal imaging on the slab. The goal is a mark on the floor measured in inches, not a guess measured in rooms.

That precision matters because it changes the repair conversation entirely. A leak located to a single spot can often be fixed through one small, controlled opening — or avoided altogether by rerouting that one line overhead. What we will not do is start cutting concrete on a hunch. You see the evidence first, then a fixed written quote for each viable option. The price we put in writing is the price you pay.

Repair the leak, reroute the line, or repipe the house?

This is the real Memorial question, and the honest answer depends on the home's history more than the leak itself.

A spot repair makes sense for a first leak in a system that pressure-tests well otherwise. A reroute — abandoning the failed under-slab run and racing a new line through the attic — often beats opening the slab at all, especially under wood floors or tile you can't match. But when we're back at the same address for the third leak in four years, the math has changed: each visit is buying less time, and the remaining original pipe is all the same age. At that point a whole-home repipe stops being the expensive option and becomes the cheap one, measured over the next decade.

Memorial has one more factor in its favor: this is a neighborhood in mid-renovation. If you're planning to open walls anyway — a kitchen, a primary bath, a full remodel — that is the moment to repipe, because the access that drives most of the cost is already paid for. What do the trees and the rain do to Memorial drains?

The wooded lots that define Memorial come with underground consequences. Yard sewer lines here are long — these are big properties — and they run beneath mature pines and oaks whose roots find any joint that weeps, particularly in homes still draining through original cast iron.
